There were times I wondered why I was doing it. But once we got started, I didn’t want to compromise at all.
We protect navigational decisions in our ships to protect whales and minimise the risk of collisions.
So we found a guy who invented a solution. We provide a breeding site for mosquitoes where once they lay their eggs, the water gets cleaned out so the mosquito population is suppressed and dies off naturally. So far, it’s been very successful and I’m working with him on commercializing it.
We are not only responsibly removing our waste, but we are also able to regularly clean our beaches and keep harmful rubbish away from the ocean – and one of the programmes tailored by the Anambas Foundation is to educate the locals on the importance of keeping the ocean clean. From day one, our plans have been created with sustainability and the environment in mind, thus the Anambas Foundation has an incredibly important role.
Since 1976, Warwick has played an important role in my life, shaping how I think and how I approach the world. I've always believed universities like Warwick are at their best when they bring people together to solve global challenges, and supporting research that drives innovation in sustainable energy feels both urgent and necessary.
We have an ambition that by 2022, we will make the Anambas waters plastic-free.
Fogging tends to kills butterflies and most insects; the chemicals will also get into the lagoon and damage the coral.
When the opportunity came up to develop Bawah into a resort, we wanted to preserve and keep it as the first time when we saw it. Making it all even more important that we follow a sustainable operational plan protecting the land and the sea while lifting the welfare of the surrounding communities. I have always been very passionate about preserving nature.
Until then, my holidays were mostly going away on a boat. I’d been to very few high-end resorts then, so a super luxury resort wasn’t my first idea.
All those achievements we have with the resort will mean a lot less if our neighboring villages do not grow together with us. That is why it is imperative that we ensure to bring the community to grow together with us, and the foundation can help us achieve that.
I was a virgin in that area, to borrow from Richard Branson.
I have always been very passionate about preserving nature.
